How to Choose the Perfect Wardrobe for Your Bedroom
Picking the right wardrobe is more than just storage — it defines your bedroom's style and efficiency. Here's what every homeowner should know before buying.
Why Your Wardrobe Choice Matters More Than You Think
A wardrobe is the largest piece of furniture in most Indian bedrooms. It sets the tone for the entire room — the wrong one can make a spacious bedroom feel cramped; the right one transforms the same space into a calm, organised retreat. After building hundreds of custom wardrobes across India, here is our practical guide to getting the decision right.
Step 1 — Measure Your Space (Don't Skip This)
Before looking at any design, measure your room carefully:
- Floor area: Note the length × width of the wall where the wardrobe will sit.
- Ceiling height: A wardrobe that runs floor-to-ceiling eliminates the dust-collecting top gap and makes rooms feel taller.
- Door swing clearance: If you choose hinged doors, you need at least 2 feet of clear space in front. Sliding doors need zero extra clearance — ideal for compact rooms.
Pro tip: Always leave at least 3–4 inches between the wardrobe and adjacent walls or doors so they don't clash when opened.
Step 2 — Sliding Doors vs Hinged Doors
This is the most common question we get. The honest answer:
- Hinged doors give you full access to the entire wardrobe interior in one go. Great for large bedrooms. Hardware is simpler and cheaper to repair.
- Sliding doors are the smarter choice for most Indian apartments where bedroom sizes run 10×12 to 12×14 feet. The track system requires maintenance every 2–3 years but modern bottom-track designs are far more reliable than older top-track systems.
Step 3 — Choose Your Interior Layout First
Most people pick the exterior first and then squeeze their clothes into whatever interior comes with it. Do it the other way around:
- Count your hanging garments (full-length saris, suits, dresses vs short shirts).
- Estimate shelf space needed for folded items, shoes, and accessories.
- Decide whether you need a dedicated drawer section, a mirror, or a locker compartment.

Step 4 — Material Matters in India's Climate
India's humidity variations are brutal on furniture. Here is what holds up best:
- Marine-grade plywood (18mm BWP): The gold standard. Resists moisture, termites, and warping. More expensive but lasts 15–20 years.
- MDF with laminate: Smooth finish, cost-effective, good for low-humidity regions. Avoid in coastal or high-humidity areas.
- Particle board: Budget option. Fine for dry climates if kept away from moisture. Edges must be properly sealed.
Step 5 — Finish and Style
Your wardrobe should feel like a natural extension of your bedroom, not a standalone object dropped in:
- Matte laminate: Fingerprint-resistant, contemporary, easy to maintain.
- High-gloss PU: Luxurious look that reflects light — great for darker bedrooms.
- Wood veneer: Warm, natural texture that pairs beautifully with earthy tones.
- Glass panels: Modern and airy. Frosted or tinted glass adds privacy without blocking light.
